At No. 45 Brunswick Square, Edward Carpenter (18441929) was born. He came from a naval family but rebelled against the society into which he had been born. He took holy orders but relinquished them. He became involved in the university extension movement and wrote on social subjects. At one time he managed to combine his literary activities with those of marketgardening and sandalmaking.
